Insurance for pregnant women requires adequate researching into the matter and carefully analyzing the options available. In fact, most of the insurance companies suggest that women should purchase their insurance policies before pregnancy.

Getting insurance during pregnancy to cover maternity expenses can therefore be quite complicated and expensive, particularly in case a pregnant woman has never had insurance. Acquiring an appropriate insurance policy covering the costs of prenatal care is even more difficult.

Therefore it is essential to find out about the various policies, comparative quotes along with proper details about coverage and other facilities available to suit one’s needs effectively.

Moreover, certain federally funded programs have specific health insurance plans catering to the needs of pregnant women with severe financial constraints.

Another important confusion when dealing with insurance for pregnant women is whether pregnancy is considered as a pre existing condition or not.

In this regard, it is worth noting that according to the guidelines laid down by Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) group health insurance policies are not supposed to consider pregnancy as a pre existing condition (although exceptions are always there).

However, this rule does not apply to the individual insurance policies and hence they do consider pregnancy as a pre existing condition. Besides, switching health plans and acquiring insurance for pregnant women can be more of a problem if the pregnancy is beyond the first trimester.
